After the 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga’s Friday night Topspiel, Davie Selke, Niklas Stark, Per Skjelbred and Marvin Plattenhardt gave their thoughts. Here they are, collated for your reading:
Marvin Plattenhardt: We are pleased with the point, but there was more in it for us. Unfortunately Duda was offside when he put the ball in the back of the net – obviously that’s really annoying and frustrating for us, but that’s part of the game. In the first half we played some decent football, and in the second – you could tell Dortmund upped the pressure. Maybe our energy levels dropped a little as well.
Valentino Lazaro: We would definitely have taken a point before the game. We’re not completely dissatisfied, because Borussia Dortmund are a quality team. You could see how well the coaches had set us up and prepared us for today: we pressed and worked hard off the ball, we all fought for every blade of grass. I think there was more in this game – we were unlucky not to go 2-0 up, and with a two-goal cushion we would have been far more likely to take the three points. Then we lost the ball sloppily and conceded the equaliser. From there, it was clear that Dortmund, given their quality, would push on for the win. We knew we had to at least secure the point in those last 15 minutes – a point, after all, is not bad.
Per Skjelbred: At the start of the second half we had a good 15 minutes and we should really have made it 2-0 in that time. Had we done so, it would have been a different result, but Dortmund pressed hard after that. You need a bit of luck against big teams, we weren’t lucky enough to get the win, but we’ll happily take a point against Dortmund. We’ve come out of this game with a good feeling and just have to carry on working.
Davie Selke: If we’d kept that lead for longer it would only have become more difficult for Dortmund. After the equaliser they obviously started pressing more and more and if you take the whole 90 minutes into consideration, a draw if fair. Valentino Lazaro gave me the perfect early birthday present – it was an outstanding ball from him that I didn’t even catch properly, but it still went in. After the equaliser you could see how good our defence is, they did really well out there. Up front we were lurking and hoping for a ball to slip through but unfortunately it didn’t. All in all, we put on a good show today, played good football and pushed Dortmund all the way. We can be proud of this performance and we can build on it.
