Hamburg – In the final game of matchday 23, Hertha BSC were hosted by Hamburger SV. However, Pál Dárdai’s men weren’t able to take anything home from Hamburg, losing 1-0 to an Albin Ekdal goal in the second half.
Hertha leave Hamburg empty-handed
The Blue-Whites lose 1-0 to HSV.
For the third time in a row, head coach Pál Dárdai named an unchanged starting XI. Lustenburger was forced out of the matchday squad as he’s suffering from the flu, so Allan Souza replaced him. It was the first time the Brazilian was included in the 18-man matchday squad since he returned from the U20s Copa America – he started from the bench. The hosts made two changes to their team that was knocked out of the DFB Cup midweek by Borussia Mönchengladbach – Mavraj (injured) and Sakai (bench) were replaced by Walace and Diekmeier.
Both teams looked to go forwards from the start of the game. After an early Hunt goal was ruled out for offside (2’), Vladmir Darida tried his luck from distance two minutes later but missed the target. In the 14th minute, a dangerous Holtby chance was deflected for a corner. Five minutes later, Rune Almenning Jarstein made a fine save with a strong right hand to deny Müller and keep the score 0-0. Both defences looked solid for the remainder of the first period, as both sides found it hard to carve out any meaningful chances. However, there was one final chance shortly before half time, as Papadopoulos headed wide from a free kick.
Both coaches sent their teams out unchanged, but that didn’t last long as Pál Dárdai brought on Ondraj Duda for Stark who was on a yellow card. After an hour, Salomon Kalou had a shot from inside the area but the Ivorian didn’t get enough purchase on it. At the other end of the pitch, Marvin Plattenhardt set up Müller but his effort was saved by Jarstein (65’). Hertha were becoming more dangerous - Duda played a lovely pass to Haraguchi, who in turn found Ibisevic but his ball to Darida had too much on it (67’). Adler was left helpless when a Darida shot was deflected, but the ball wide flashed past his goal (75’). Two minutes later, the opening goal finally arrived, but it was HSV who found the back of the net. Hunt found Ekdal in the box who turned the ball home first time. The Blue-Whites looked for a response, and Alexander Esswein was subbed on for Haraguchi with five minutes remaining. However, the visitors couldn’t find a late equaliser.
Next weekend, another tough test awaits Hertha, as Borussia Dortmund come to the Olympiastadion (15:30 CET, 11/03).
2’: Hunt scores but it’s ruled out for offside.
4’: Darida’s first shot on goal, but his effort from 20 yards narrowly misses the target.
14’: Hamburg counter, Langkamp and Plattenhardt combine to clear The second ball from Holtby is deflected for a corner, which brings nothing.
16’: That was the first really dangerous moment the club from the capital had to deal with. Apart from that, the Blue-Whites are showing the right attitude.
20’: JARSTEIN!!! What a save on Müller! He reaches out a strong right hand to make sure his side don’t go behind!
24’: Hertha are looking promising going forwards, but the final pass is lacking. The lads have to execute their counter attacks better.
33’: Free kick to HSV on the left touchline. Walace slides in at the back post but Kalou was there if he had made a meaningful contact.
40’: Plattenhardt is played free by Kalou. The left-back crosses into the box and Ibisevic is challenging against his marker. Referee Brych decides it's a foul by the attacker, but ‘Vedator’ wouldn’t have reached the ball anyway.
52’: After a brief appearance last week, our summer signing Ondrej Duda gets a longer run out. Show us what you can do!
57’: Like in the first half, it’s an open game but action in both penalty areas is scarce.
62’: Haraguchi wonderfully sets Kalou free, the Ivorian has a chance to shoot but slips. That’s a shame as it would have been a lovely combination.
65’: Plattenhardt doesn’t fully clear the ball, Müller takes advantage of this but only shoots into the arms of Jarstein.
67’: Oh no! Duda does really well to beat his man and find Haraguchi. There’s an overload as Ibisevic is in space, however, the captain passes to Darida instead of shooting himself and his pass isn’t accurate enough.
70’: The next chance. Duda plays Ibisevic through on the right, the attacker plays the ball low into the middle but a HSV shirt clears. More of the same please, lads!
76’: Hertha were just centimetres from taking the lead! Darida shoots from 20 yards, Papadopoulos deflects his effort and the ball flashes narrowly past the post.
77’: Goal for Hamburger SV. Ekdal opens the scoring with just under 15 minutes left to play. The Swede turns the ball home on the penalty spot. A first-time effort which left Jarstein with no chance. A frustrating goal to concede after Hertha had been applying pressure.
82’: Hertha get a free kick in the middle of the park. Adler punches away but only as far as Haraguchi who sends the ball over the bar.
93’: That’s the game. On the 23rd Bundesliga matchday, Hertha BSC lose 1-0 away to Hamburger SV. Ekdal with the only goal of the game in the 77th minute.
