Berlin- Just a few days remain for Marvin Plattenhardt before he finds out his fate. Whether or not he has realized his dream and made the Germany World Cup squad for 201. Joachim Löw will name his final 23-man squad for Russia on 4 June, cutting four players from his current crop. “Everyone is hoping to be on the plane, but it would be a childhood dream come true for me,” said Plattenhardt. The left-back must however first show his stuff on the pitch to coach Löw, and that is the aim of the training camp in Eppan. “The word here is hard and intense, but the mood is good. You can feel something big brewing ahead of Russia,” added the 26-year-old.
Hertha re-unions
Among the training sessions and team meetings in Eppan Plattenhardt has also been briefly re-united with three Hertha colleagues – Maxi Mittelstädt, Jordan Torunarigha and Sidney Friede, all there with the Germany U20s have played two friendlies against Die Mannschaft, losing 7-1 on Monday before a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday. Manuel Neuer, who is aiming to regain full match fitness before the tournament, played in goal behind Mittelstädt and Torunarigha on Wednesday morning.
Plattenhardt knows how vital Neuer could be to Germany’s chances. “I got to know Manuel personally a lot better on this trip and I have seen his performances up close for the first time, even though he hasn’t played in a year,” said Platte. Germany are set to face Mexico, Sweden and South Korea, with friendlies up against Saudi Arabia and Austria coming up in the next few days.
Genki Haraguchi and Japan started their preparations on Wednesday, but went down 2-0 to Ghana in Yokohama.
Leckie versus Darida
Friday will see two Hertha players come together when Australia play Darida. That means a meeting for Mathew Leckie and Vladimir Darida. The ‘Socceroos will face France, Denmark and Peru in Group C. Leckie and co will also play Nigeria and Hungary before travelling to Russia. Rune Jarstein will play Island and Panama before they both head to the world cup and Ondrej Duda will be hoping to feature for Slovakia against Holland and Morocco.
