First friendly, first win

Hertha won their charity game in Oranienburg by a score of 2-0.

Oranienburg – Manager Pal Dardai and his men secured a 2-0 win over FC Oranienburg in their charity friendly on Friday evening (07/07/17). The goals were scored by Palko Dardai and Alexander Esswein.

As Hertha still wait on those players called up for international duty over the summer break, the rest of the team took on Oranienburg as a part of their preseason fixture list. Salomon Kalou, Jordan Torunarigha, and Fabian Lustenberger had good chances in the opening quarter of an hour to take the lead. The biggest chance came when Thomas Kraft, who was playing at the right-back position, missed a penalty (17’). Following good attempts on goal by Lustenberger and Kraft, Palko Dardai broke the deadlock in the 26th minute and gave his side the lead. Despite Hertha dominating, another goal would not be seen until after the whistle for half time.

Immediately to training camp after the whistle

Pal Dardai made some changes in the second half, with just Klinsmann, Torunarigha, Kurt, Stocker, and Covic playing the full 90 minutes. Dennis Smarsch took over at right-back in place of Kraft, who is actually a goalkeeper. Substitute Alexander Esswein missed a chance three minutes after the restart, before Kade then saw his long-distance attempt veer off target. Hertha were all over their opponents but were just lacking the final pass. The host’s goalkeeper managed to parry a free kick from Kurt (61’), as well as a shot from Arne Maier (64’), but was ultimately beaten for a second time in the game as Covic cleanly put Esswein through who made no mistake in giving Hertha a well-deserved 2-0 lead (72’). The Blue-Whites had numerous more chances, but they all came to nothing.

Upon finishing their first friendly of the season, the Hertha boys continued on their journey to Bad Saarow, where they will spend until Thursday (13/07/17) working on their physical attributes. Things get going again on Saturday morning, with Pal Dardai, Rainer Widmayer, and in particular fitness coach Henrik Kuchno having penciled in three sessions per day.

The line-up: Klinsmann - Kraft (46‘ Smarsch), Langkamp (46‘ Baak), Torunarigha, Kurt - Lustenberger (46‘ Kade), Skjelbred (46‘ Maier) - Dardai (46‘ Mittelstädt), Stocker, Covic - Kalou (46‘ Esswein)
