Berlin – There were many worthy candidates, but you have chosen. From all players to take to the pitch for Hertha in the Bundesliga during the 2018-19 season, one player won the fans over the most: Valentino Lazaro is your Hertha Player of the Season! The Austria international secured 29.9 percent of the vote, while Davie Selke (16.9%) finished second and Marvin Plattenhardt (13.75%) took bronze.
The midfielder, who joined from Salzburg in summer 2017, initially had to fight an ankle injury. He slowly got more and more gametime each match until he became a regular starter for the capital club. In total, he made 26 appearances in the German top flight, scoring two goals and making five assists. In addition, he made four appearances in the Europa League and made one assist as well as making one appearance in the DFB-Pokal. With his attacking play and beautiful passes, Lazaro regularly attracted a lot of attention. His dribbling when up against Bremen’s Gebre Selassie sticks in the memories of many fans, when he stylishly danced past his man down the wing and penetrated the Werder box.
Rookie of the Month
It wasn’t just the Hertha fans who were won over by Lazaro’s performances in his debut season at the capital club. The 22-year-old secured the title of Rookie of the Month for March on Bundesliga.de; other players to have received that title over the season include Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey and Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho. The technically-gifted Lazaro can play in multiple attacking roles and can play on both wings or in the centre. “I’m happy to have him here. Valentino is a winner. He’s a good lad who has his own ideas,” Pál Dárdai praises his player.
