Berlin – The Blue-Whites gave their all to overcome VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday evening (31st March). The Hertha players created a few good chances in the first half, but were missing the luck they needed to find the back of the net. However, the performance was enough to come away with three points in the end. Niklas Stark, Maximilian Mittelstädt, Mathew Leckie, Salomon Kalou and returnee Julian Schieber give their thoughts on the goalless draw after the final whistle.
Julian Schieber: The substitution seemed to happen so quickly, I couldn’t really enjoy the moment properly. Of course, in the short time I was on the pitch, I tried to find ways through to goal. To be honest, I’m happy to be a part of the team again after such a long time – after 14 months. It was a really tough time; I had to work very hard to be able to stand on the pitch again. But physically, I feel great. I’m looking forward now and I’m sure that more appearances will follow. I believe in myself to be able to play another three or four years at the highest level and I’m delighted that I could get stuck in today. We have a great squad and pretty much no injuries currently, so it’s hard to earn a place in the squad, but I’m going to continue to give my all in training.
Niklas Stark: When you keep hearing that we need to start scoring again, the topic is always in the back of your mind. When you really want it, it doesn’t always work out – we just have to remain patient and calm. On the positive side, we kept a clean sheet again.
Salomon Kalou: The first half was good, we had more chances. We didn’t put the under enough pressure in the second half. A draw is not enough, we wanted to secure all three points today. It’s disappointing. We had to created more chances and won the second balls.
Mathew Leckie: We wanted the three points today. We had a few chances, but we didn’t make anything of them. We have to try to take the positives from the game. We had some dangerous chances in the first half and they would’ve gone in on other days. Our aim is still to reach 40 points as soon as possible.
Maximilian Mittelstädt: We didn’t allow them many chances – we were strong at the back. We just have to keep working hard. It’s a shame that my shot didn’t go in – for a brief moment I thought that the ball might possibly sneak in. However, it was a good game for me and I’m going to continue working hard. Of course, Marvin Plattenhardt has a special status as a Germany left-back. I simply try to be there and help the team when I’m called up.
