Flying to Berlin?
Berlin is served by three airports, all of which offer easy-access services into the city centre and to the Olympiastadion.
Tegel (TXL)
13405 Berlin (Reinickendorf)
Tegel is the main airport in west Berlin and less than five miles from the Olympiastadion. On the descent into Berlin on this route, one can actually catch a glimpse of the arena. The public transport connections are excellent, the centre of town only 10-15 minutes away. City and transport maps are available at the airport's Tourist Information Centre.
To get into central Berlin by bus: Bus X9, 109, 128
Bus connections to the tube and Zoo Station (Central Station near the Ku'damm area) are located just outside the airport terminal.
Route 1: Bus X9 to U6 Jakob-Kaiser-Platz then change to the tube from where you can reach any destination.
Route 2: Bus X9 and 109 to the Zoologischer Garten U-Bahn (tube) and S-Bahn (city trains).
Tourist information is available at the nearby Europa Centre and tube maps are widely displayed on ticket vending machines, in the tube and inside the trains.
A taxi ride to the city centre (East or West) will cost between 15 and 17 euros
Tempelhof (THF)
Platz der Luftbrücke
12101 Berlin (Tempelhof)
Tempelhof, Berlin's smallest airport, lies just south of the city centre and is served directly by the U6 (tube Line 6). Stadtmitte, the new city centre in what was formerly East Berlin is only a few stops away by tube, which means you can reach the heart of town in 15-20 minutes.
Tube station: U6 Platz der Luftbrücke
Bus: 119, 184, 341, 104, N4, N76
A taxi ride to the city centre (East or West) will cost about Euro 12
Schönefeld (SXF)
12521 Berlin
Schönefeld is situated approximately 11 miles south-east of the city centre. This is the old East Berlin Airport where most charter flight companies fly to. The easiest way to get into town is by the Airport Express Bus which will get you to the Ku'damm in around 30 minutes. Otherwise take the 171 bus to Rudow U-Bahn station and get to the Zoo by U7 (tube Line 7) or to the S-Bahn (city trains) where you can travel by S9 to Alexanderplatz.
A taxi ride into town will cost about Euro 23.00, but generally isn't much faster than public transport.
By city trains (S-Bahn): S 45, S 9
By Bus: 171, 160, 163, 602, 735, 736, 737, N46, N60
Taxis to the stadium
Taxis can be hailed on the streets or at taxi stands, and are available at all times. Taxi stands can be found at all main stations and airports as well as outside KADEWE and hotels. Most Berlin taxi drivers speak at least basic English, just give your destination and you'll be fine.
Taxi Fares: Start at around Euro 2.50 pick-up and Euro 1.53 per km; Short Ride (Kurzstrecke): a Euro 3 ride for up to 2 km drive if you hail the taxi from the street.
Public Transport to the Olympiastadion
Berlin Transport Authority (BVG)
The quickest way to get around Berlin, the network includes buses, city trains, tube, tram and even ferries. The tickets, which are available in every station and on the directly on the buses are valid on all these services.
If you're taking the tube or suburban trains, just look for the final destination on the displays to get the direction right. On matchday, don't forget that public transport costs are already included in the match ticket prices. You will not need a public transport ticket to and from the stadium on the day of the game, three hours prior to and three hours after the game. The public transport ticket is integrated into the match ticket, in the case of a ticket inspection just show your match ticket to the inspectors.
The Olympiastadion is served from the Zoo Station by the S9 and S75 (direction Spandau) and the U2 (direction Ruhleben). The trains run every 5-10 minutes, the journey takes only 13 minutes to the stadium. There will also be bus services in operation from the Zoo, but could take longer than schedule on matchday.
Fares and Zones:
There are a few variations on the fares which are calculated on the basis of a zone-tarif system. Berlin is divided into transport zones A, B and C but for most travel purposes, and for the Olympiastadion in particular, zones A and B will be sufficient. A ticket is valid for 2 hours and can be used interchangeably on bus, U-Bahn and S-Bahn.
