“I give everything on the pitch to help my team”

New signing Santiago Ascacibar spoke in his first interview as a Hertha player about his nicknames, his first impressions of Berlin and his targets to achieve at his new club.

When Hertha BSC fly out to their training camp in Florida on January 2nd, there will be a new face on the plane. Santiago Ascacibar completed his transfer to the club from VfB Stuttgart and in addition to his own clear plan, feels a lot of anticipation ahead of this new challenge. “In the short-term, my first aim is to integrate well and then become a regular starter in the team,” said the 22-year-old Argentine. “I firmly believe that I can continue my development at Hertha BSC and am very happy to be here!” In his first interview as a blue and white, Ascacibar spoke with herthabsc.de about his first impressions of the capital, what he does in his spare time, and his reasons for his decision to move to Berlin.
herthabsc.de: Santiago, welcome to Berlin! What were your main reasons for transferring to Hertha BSC?
Ascacibar: Thanks a lot! Hertha is a big club, which represents a very exciting challenge for me. I firmly believe that I can continue my development as a player here and keep being the best player I can be, so I’m very happy to be here now!
herthabsc.de: What are your goals for your time with this club, both in the next six months and longer term?
Ascacibar: In the short-term my first goal with a new club is always to integrate well and then become a regular starter. I’ll work hard to achieve that and try my best. In the longer-term, the goal is to get into the UEFA Europa or Champions League and also to start playing for silverware!
herthabsc.de: How would you describe yourself as a player?
Ascacibar: Ah, now that’s a tricky question (laughs). I would say that I am first and foremost a professional, who is always 100% committed to helping out the team. I give everything on the pitch to help my team!

herthabsc.de: What do you like to do in your free time, when you’re not on the pitch?
Ascacibar: I like to spend time with my girlfriend, for example sometimes we go out to eat or go shopping. In Argentina I also liked to go fishing with my whole family, but we haven’t been able to do that much since I started playing in Germany (grinning). Here I much prefer to go and spend time with my girlfriend.
herthabsc.de: Your nickname is ‘El Ruso’ (The Russian). How did this come about? Do you have any other nicknames, and what do your teammates normally call you?
Ascacibar: The other lads at my first club in Argentina gave me the name ‘Ruso’ because of my blonde hair (smiles). I don’t really have any other nicknames. My teammates in Germany usually call me Santi, but at some point my closer friends in the team do call me ‘Ruso’  like everyone else in Argentina.
herthabsc.de: What are your general impression of Berlin? Did you already know a little bit about the city?
Ascacibar: It's my first time in Berlin and I’m already looking forward to getting to know the city! My first impressions were very good and there’s a lot of life in the streets. There is so much to see and to learn, and I can’t wait to do both of those!
herthabsc.de: Speaking of first impressions, you’re yet to play at the Olympiastadion. Are you looking forward to your first appearance there?
Ascacibar: I’m really looking forward to that, because although I obviously know about the stadium, I’ve yet to experience playing there. Playing in that historic stadium will definitely be something special!
