Fabian Lustenberger, Davie Selke, Marko Grujić, Lukas Klünter, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Salomon Kalou spoke after Hertha’s 3-0 away win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday afternoon.
Hertha picked up a massive victory on the road this afternoon, beating Gladbach 3-0 despite their strong home form this season. The Old Lady were fully-focused right up until the final whistle, even though they were taken to extra time in the cup during the week.
Fabian Lustenberger: We had a few problems getting into the game during the first 25 or 30 minutes, because Gladbach played so well. After that we defended really strongly, played intensely and won a lot of challenges. That’s why we deserved the 3-0 victory. Winning by so many in Gladbach is something to shout about! We’re really happy with this away win! We’ve picked up six points against Gladbach this season now, very few teams can say that. We’re going home very, very happy. Our young players deserve to celebrate this victory tonight.
Davie Selke: Borussia are strong at home and of course we hoped we could beat them 3-0, but we never expected that we would. We played very well defensively, threw ourselves into every challenge and converted when we went forward. Our potential is there for all to see. It’s no secret that we have it, but we need to show it constantly. The incentive was there to win here for the first time in ten years. Every run breaks at some point, and we spoke about that in the dressing room. A performance like this deserves a lot of respect and we can be proud. After playing 120 minutes during the week, the win counts for even more.
Lukas Klünter: I had a good feeling from the start. We went into the game with a positive mindset and we played well. After the difficult opening phase, we settled down and found our footing in the game, scored the goals, and had good interplay. I’ve waited patiently for my chance and I got it. I’m pleased that it’s a good first step for me personally!
Maximilian Mittelstädt: I think we deserved to win. We took the game by the scruff of the neck, played well on the counter, and on another day we maybe could have scored one or two more goals. It was a fantastic team performance in defence, we defended together really well. We can build on this!
Salomon Kalou: The best way to defend is to keep your opponents as far away from your goal as possible, and that’s what we did. I wanted to shoot earlier with my goal, but I knew that the defender would block it, so I needed a plan B (laughs). It’s always a difficult game against Gladbach, but they’re good games too because they try to find a way forward and so we get our chances – that was the case this time.
Marko Grujić: First of all, we have to say that it’s an incredible victory against one of the top teams in the Bundesliga, especially after the 120 minutes against Bayern and the disappointment at the end. We didn’t know how long we’d be able to keep it up, but in the end we did it well. Now we have enough time to recover and refuel for Bremen next Saturday.
