Bochum – To mark the 40th birthday of the Ruhrstadion, Hertha visited VfL Bochum on Saturday night (20/07/19). New signing Dedryck Boyata appeared for Hertha for the first time. Ante Čović’s side drew 1-1 with the Bundesliga 2 side.
The ‘Old Lady’ controlled proceedings early on, having the first shot of the match: Ondrej Duda hammered just over the home crossbar in the fifth minute. Fifteen minutes later, Duda played in Marko Grujić, who cut inside and saw his curling shot just miss the far post (20’). The opening goal of the game then somewhat surprisingly was scored by the hosts: Danny Blum converted a free-kick from the edge of the box in the 22nd minute. Bochum clearly gained some confidence from the goal and Sebastian Maier almost doubled their lead six minutes later with a bending long ranger. Rune Jarstein was on hand to deny Blum his second in the 34th minute before Miloš Pantović was inches away from stabbing home at the back post (39’). Hertha were lucky to only be one down at this point, but that didn’t bother them, as Salomon Kalou ran to the byline and crossed it for ‘Number 10’ Ondrej Duda to tap in for the equaliser.
Head coach Čović then made seven changes at half time. It didn’t take long for one of those to stand out: Dennis Smarsch made an excellent stop from a powerful Blum effort in the 54th minute. Alexander Esswein, who came on for Lukas Klünter after the break, had Hertha’s first shot in the 60th minute, however his shot landed in the arms of home keeper Riemann. Hertha continued to push for the winner, and Niklas Stark had the best chance from a Marvin Plattenhardt cross, however he couldn’t keep his header down. Davie Selke had two late chances (85’, 90’) to score, but failed to take either, meaning it finished 1-1.
Hertha’s XI: Jarstein (46‘ Smarsch), Plattenhardt, Boyata (46‘ Rekik), Stark, Klünter (58‘ Esswein), Grujić, Skjelbred (46‘ Darida), Duda (46’ Čović), Dilrosun (46’ Leckie), Ibišević (46’ Selke), Kalou (46’ Köpke)
