In a difficult game against Mainz 05, Hertha BSC came out on top and earned all three points. It was also their first home victory of 2019. Valentino Lazaro, Marko Grujić, Niklas Stark, Arne Maier und Rune Jarstein all gave their views on the game.
Valentino Lazaro: That was a funny game. We began well in the first five to ten minutes and played with swagger. However, after that we started losing every second ball and were not aggressive enough. We were lucky to go in at halftime 0-0. We wanted to come out in the second half and give everything but in the first minute after the restart, they scored. I think conceding woke us up. We played well and defended as a unit. We scored twice, had more chances and continued to defend well. We can be satisfied with the result because we know difficult Mainz are to play. We fought for our first victory at home in 2019. Against Bremen, we deserved a victory and so the last minute of today was a bit nervy. But, we are happy that we got all three points.
Marko Grujić: That was an extremely important win for us. I can’t put into words how important it was. Especially because we were awful in the first half. We simply didn’t get into the game and Mainz did well on their side. The second half began with an odd own goal. However, we showed our togetherness and scored two quick goals. My goal was maybe the easiest one I have had to score in my whole career. Davie headed the ball, the keeper made the save and I was just in the right place at the right time. We expect a tough away game in Freiburg next week. If we play like we did in the second half, then we have a chance to take all three points.
Niklas Stark: The victory was very important for us as we had not won at home for a while and wanted to make things right. In the first half, we didn’t play well and didn’t win enough second balls. The second half didn’t begin well for us either. I tried to head the ball away but instead it went into the back of the net. Their goal was kind of a ‘can opener’ today. We became more aggressive and had that extra sprint in our step. Tino did well for the second goal to find me and I just hit the ball into the back of the net. The fact that we were able to turn the game around shows how together we are. We can be happy!
Arne Maier: After going one down, we got into the game, scored to quick goals and in the end deserved the victory. Sometimes you need a setback in order to wake up and that happened to us today. We can build from this win.
Rune Jarstein: I am happy with the three points, but not with the game. In the first half, we played badly. We didn’t start well in the second half either. We were lucky that they didn’t score a second. But of course, it is a good feeling to claim the three points at home again. We need to improve for next week against Freiburg. After the own goal, I ran to Niklas and told him to make it right and he did.
