Season suspension to continue

The Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2. seasons are to remain suspended until April 2nd 2020. The German Football League (DFL) made the decision in a meeting on Monday afternoon.

The Bundesliga season will remain suspended as a result of the effects of the Coronavirus. The DFL, along with the 36 German professional football clubs, confirmed the decision in a special meeting in Frankfurt on Monday afternoon (16.03.20), meaning that all games up until the 2nd are to be postponed. The president of the DFL already cancelled Matchday 26 on last Friday due to the virus’ rapid spread, therefore the game against Hoffenheim last Saturday was also cancelled.

However, the disruption to the season does not mean that the next round of Bundesliga fixtures will be played out on the first weekend after April 2nd. During the week of March 30th, a further meeting with the clubs will take place, and a UEFA meeting on Tuesday March 17th will also factor into the decision-making process. “Then it will be clearer on which options we have to bring the season to a close,” explained DFL CEO Christian Seifert. As a result of this decision, the derby against Union Berlin that was due to take place this weekend will be rearranged.
