Berlin - Just as the squad arrived back in Berlin from the training camp, they were greeted by a new player: Dodi Lukébakio has joined the club. The 21-year-old has arrived in Berlin from Watford. “Dodi Lukébakio is a dynamic attacker, who not only scores goals, but can also make them too. He proved his quality last season in the Bundesliga. We’re pleased that we convinced him to sign for Hertha BSC and believe that he will help our team greatly,” said sporting director Michael Preetz.
The young Belgian striker was clearly pleased after signing his long-term deal at the club. “Hertha is a big club in Germany and showed a lot of interest in me. I knew very quickly that I wanted to join the club. I want to play a lot of football here and score loads of goals,” commented the new signing, who will wear the number 28 at Hertha.
Lukébakio spent last season on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf, scoring ten goals in 31 games, as well as adding four assists. The winger, who can also play up front, also scored four goals and created one in the three DFB-Pokal games. He came through RSC Anderlecht’s youth academy, eventually making his professional debut for the Belgian record champions in the 2015/16 Jupiler Pro League. After going on loan to FC Toulouse and then Sporting Charleroi, he moved to Watford in late 2018. The Belgian U21s international only made one appearance in six months for Watford, before moving to Germany. He has scored four goals in 17 U21s caps for the ‘Red Devils’. Lukébakio is Hertha’s fourth summer signing after Dedryck Boyata, Eduard Löwen and Daishawn Redan.
