“…then we’ll be successful!”

Vedad Ibisevic, Per Skjelbred, Lukas Klünter, Marius Wolf, Salomon Kalou und Dodi Lukébakio gave their thoughts after the loss to Hoffenheim.

Started well, went two goals behind, came back, then let it slip: there was plenty to talk about after Hertha BSC’s home loss to TSG Hoffenheim. “We showed great character to come back from two goals down, but our defending from corners let us down today,” said a disappointed Vedad Ibisevic. We collected all the post match reaction.

Vedad Ibisevic: It’s so difficult to comment on a loss like that so soon after the final whistle. We started really well and we should’ve gone in front, first through Marius Wolf, then through me. We showed great character to come back from two goals down, but our defending from corners let us down today. It’s hard to come back from two goals down at this level.

Per Skjelbred: We played a great second half. Hoffenheim did virtually nothing, but they were always dangerous on the counter with their pace. We gave it everything we had and we managed to get the equalizer, but then we conceded that corner. It was a great cross and an even better leap, well-timed. 100 times out of 100 that goes in, and it’s disappointing to concede two goals from corners like we did today. It’s difficult to explain how it happened – we have to do better in the future.

Lukas Klünter: A win or even just a draw against Hoffenheim would’ve been extremely important. Unfortunately it didn’t come and that’s bitter for us, especially given how well we did to come back. We’ll have to pick up some extra points in another game now.

Marius Wolf: To concede two goals after corners is really annoying. We didn’t play half as well in the first half as we did in the second. We needed to be a lot more aggressive than we were in that first half. You saw how well we can play in that second half. Hoffenheim were dangerous until the end, because we had to throw guys forward to try and find an equaliser. Unfortunately the first half lost us the game.

Salomon Kalou: It would have been a great result if we had managed to pick up a point, but in the end we lost. Hoffenheim did well to keep hitting us on the break like that, and we didn’t deal with that well especially in the first half. After the break we regrouped and played much better – Dodi’s fantastic goal gave us a lot of confidence. For me it’s always about playing well and creating chances, but to be honest we would have just taken the point today. The fans were incredible yet again today, we always give everything because we know how much it means to them.

Dodi Lukebakio: We had a lot of chances and we gave it everything we had to make a comeback, but in the end we conceded that goal and it didn’t happen. It’s never easy to come back from two down. We had high hopes for this game and we’ll have to look back on our mistakes and try and improve in the coming weeks. But that’s football – we all fought well out there but we couldn’t change the result. We have to look back on what we did wrong and work on our game, only then will we be successful. We changed the system at half time and we knew what we had to do, my goal was very improvised, I didn’t even think about it – it was autonomous. But all in all I’m disappointed about the loss, we’ll have to bounce back in the coming games.  We will do everything we can to prepare for Wednesday and get the result but we have to stay positive and focus now on the task at hand in the DFB-Pokal.
