Despite their chances, Hertha will go home empty-handed after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of FSV Mainz 05. The frustration was evident after suffering their third defeat of the season, which was sealed by a late goal. "We were the better team for long stretches, even when we were 1-0 down, so we should have taken at least one point after we made it 1-1," said Davie Selke, who had a lot of chances to score himself, but lacked the finishing touch. We collected all the quotes after the game.
Davie Selke: We were the better team for long stretches, even when we were 1-0 down. After we made it 1-1 we should have taken at least a point, which would have been very important going in to the next few weeks. Now we go home empty-handed, which is a bitter feeling. We can’t forget though, that it’s still very early in the season. In the first half, I thought I made it clear that I wasn’t lacking in any self-confidence and determination, but one thing is for sure: I should’ve scored. I don’t think St. Juste could have complained if he saw red in the first half either, but the referee didn’t show it.
Marius Wolf: St. Juste was my man at the corner, I shouldn’t have let him make it 2-1. We should have at least earned a point here, if not more, but in the end we got nothing. To win, you have to score but also defend well. We lost concentration twice at the back and failed to take our chances up front. If we had taken our chances, the game would’ve been so different. We have to go on, believe in ourselves and try to eliminate our mistakes.
Marko Grujic: This was our best performance of the past three games, but we lost again. We finally scored again but conceded twice. After the equalizer, we actually had the momentum on our side but didn’t defend the corner well enough. After my goal, I ran to Ante Covic because I know how much emotion and energy he gives each and every one of us. Against Paderborn we have to give everything to try and get the win for our fans, because they’ve stuck with us during every game but we haven’t managed to reward them with three points.
Niklas Stark: The result is extremely bitter. We had our chances and could have scored but we didn’t cash in on our chances - the game would have been different if we had. We have to do better in front of goal, but at the corner we should have defended with more passion and will. Then we would have at least got a point here.
Dedryck Boyata: In the first 45 minutes we may have shown them a bit too much respect. After the break, we wanted to show a reaction, which we managed to do with the chances and the equalizer. We all showed character. Losing the game in the last minute hurts though and that was a frustrating debut for me. If you've got only one point as a team, that's not good enough so now we have to win against Paderborn next week but most of all, we have to stay positive.
Per Skjelbred: Sure, the fans expect more from us. In my opinion though, we delivered a good away performance and had a good game plan. Unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances and we made too many mistakes in defence.
