After the 3-0 loss to Schalke on Saturday, the Herthaner didn’t hold back with their self-criticism. “We let too many things slip today. We didn’t put enough pressure on our opponents and Schalke ended up with too much time to dictate the game,” said Niklas Stark who, along with Karim Rekik, scored an unlucky own goal. We collected all their thoughts from Saturday’s game.
Niklas Stark: “We let too many things slip today. We didn’t put enough pressure on our opponents and Schalke ended up with too much time to dictate the game. It’s difficult to get anything out of a match when you play like that. As for the own goal, there was a player behind me who would have put it in if I hadn’t so I tried to prevent him from scoring. I didn’t have any other option but to intervene. All in all we let in too many goals today and we’ll have to go away and analyse this game, clear our heads and go again after the international break.”
Karim Rekik: “We’ll have to put this game out of our minds quickly and try not to carry these mistakes over in to the next one. We let in too many goals. Against Bayern were scored twice ourselves so it was okay, but against Wolfsburg and Schalke we haven’t managed that. We were unlucky to concede the first two goals. Nik tried to block the cross and I found myself in a similar situation. I wanted to clear the ball of the line but both times it ended up in the back of the net. It will be incredibly important for us to clear our minds after this game.”
Lukas Klünter: “We couldn’t get a grip on the game and we didn’t defend their strikers well enough either so Schalke were always on the front foot and we were left backpedalling. We didn’t do much going forward either which was really disappointing. If you’re defending for the entire 90 minutes, how can you possibly expect to score? We made a good start to the season with the result against Bayern but to go in to the international break with two losses is incredibly disappointing. We have to use this break to work on our game.”
Marko Grujic: “We played well at the start but we didn’t take our chances and we paid the price for that. We were really unlucky to concede both own goals and we gave it our all to try and come back but it just didn’t happen for us today. We have time to analyse this loss during the international break now, and we want to win against Mainz.”
