Hertha Berlin fell to a defeat in Bremen at the Weserstadion on Tuesday. The Berliners lost for the first time this season, as Werder Bremen beat them 3-1. After the game, Fabian Lustenberger, Karim Rekik and Valentino Lazaro answered questions from the press. “We could have to make it 2-2. Then the fifth penalty in as many games happened. It is like we are cursed and it was very demoralising,” said Lazaro.
Fabian Lustenberger: Based on the chances created, it was an even game. Bremen did not have many clear-cut chances. We had a couple good chances in the first half and we tried everything we could in the second half to find the equalising goal. The defeat is not undeserved but we will not let this affect our momentum. We play again on Friday. For their first goal, I tried to kick the ball away but I could not react in time when Rune went for the ball with his hands. Of course that was very, very frustrating for me and I am sorry to the team.
Karim Rekik: Bremen were the better team in the first half, even though they did not create any clear opportunities other than a freekick and a corner. Their first goal was very unlucky for us as Rune had the ball in his hands and then suddenly the ball was in the back of the net. Them going up 2-0 made it even harder for us. In the second half we came out much better and Javairo got us back in the game. However, the penalty followed and that killed off the game. Of course we are missing an important player in Marko Grujic but we have to play better with the team we have.
Valentino Lazaro: We went into the game very motivated. In the early phases of the game, we realised that out opponents were playing a bit differently than expected. They got in between our lines well and it took us time to adjust to that. Nevertheless, Bremen did not have any clear chances and the goals they scored were gifts. In the second half, we got off to a great start and started to play better football. At this stage we could have made it 2-2. Unfortunately, the fifth penalty in as many games then happened. We must be cursed and that ended our hopes of getting an equaliser. Now we have to recover and prepare for Bayern on Friday. Still, we have started this season well.
