"Winning is the most important thing"

Peter Pekarik, Alexander Schwolow, Dedryck Boyata and Niklas Stark reflect on a stunning 4-1 win over Werder Bremen on matchday one.

Niklas StarkIt’s never easy when you come to Bremen, but we performed really well as a team. It’s a successful start to the season. When you lose a match like we did in Braunschweig, it haunts you a little bit, so it’s even more satisfying that we were able to do better today, especially in defence. We had more answers to what Bremen threw at us. It’s a big step in the right direction. We know that we have to keep working hard, but this is the standard that we should hold ourselves to.

Peter Pekarik: It’s a great start for us, especially after the loss in the Pokal. The match was really important for us so I am happy that it went so well. We were more compact in defence, more aggressive in the tackles. That’s what we were missing in Braunschweig. It’s nice to score again, and I’m happy that I was able to help the team. But winning is the most important thing. Nothing too bad happened to my calf – I just landed awkwardly after an aerial duel. It hurt straight away, but it’s just a bruise.

Alexander Schwolow: That’s exactly how you want your first match to go – it would have been even better if we had kept a clean sheet. We defended well, and I was able to show what I can do. Victory tastes even better after such a rough cup match. After the Werder goal, we did well to withstand the pressure. Full credit goes to the guys in front of me – 'Dedo' and Jordan won everything in the air. We can go back to Berlin really happy – the team as a whole had a really good game. If we can get even better, you won’t hear me complaining! (grins).

Dedryck Boyata: It was the first match of the Bundesliga season. Getting off to a strong start in the first match is always important. We did well and achieved a great result, even without away fans to support us. We can be happy with the result. It was a good performance, a really positive match that we can take a lot from. But there’s still a long way to go. Our forwards are unbelievable and I think that they can help us to achieve great things, but it’s a team performance. Their quality doesn’t matter if we can’t keep it tidy at the back. Sure, we conceded one goal, but we scored four. That shows the quality that we have in the side.

Davie Selke (Werder Bremen): I don’t feel too good right now. We worked really hard in our preparations and we had a really good feeling during preseason, but unfortunately we weren’t really able to show what we can do in this match. But it’s nonsense to say that nothing has changed for us. We’ll prove it in the next few matches.
