Berlin – The Hertha players were out early on Saturday morning in the Berlin sunshine for an intra-squad friendly at the Stadion auf dem Wurfplatz/Amateurstadion. Javairo Dilrosun, who was rested and Arne Maier, who has a back problem, didn’t take part, although both were in the stands to watch their teammates.
Cunha the star
The first 20 minutes between the two Hertha sides were fairly even. Jessic Ngankam had the ball in the net after 18 minutes, however he committed a foul in the build-up so his goal was ruled out. The referee then pointed to the spot two minutes later at the other end. Marvin Plattenhardt fouled Matheus Cunha in the box and the Brazilian stepped up and opened the scoring (20’). No further goals came in an intense but fair first period. Cunha then added a second in the 59th minute with a stunning long-range curler. The team in the home shirts fought back though soon after, as Ngankam’s goal this time did count (74’). Neither side managed to find another goal, although Pascal Köpke was taken off as a precaution with a slight thigh problem before the end, meaning the ‘home’ team ended with a man advantage. The session was then finished off with a stretching programme.
“That went how we’d hoped it would go,” said a satisfied Bruno Labbadia after the session’s conclusion. “This ended an intense week, which has seen a lot of exercise for the lads. The game was played at a good intensity and all the players had the same workload.” The players now have Sunday off after a busy week. Labbadia’s next training session will take place on Tuesday (4/8). Fans are still not permitted to watch training at Schenckendorffplatz due to the ongoing pandemic.
