The cold, blistery weather conditions had no effect on the atmosphere around the training ground as the players trained. The Herthaner had reason to be in a positive mood: It was Arne Maier’s 20th birthday and his teammates sung him Happy Birthday as he arrived. Maier thanked his teammates: “That was nice of them! The lads all hit the right notes,” joked the birthday boy. However, there were also positives on a sporting side as well. Davie Selke returned to first team training after recovering from a small calf problem.
Game time for Stark and Rekik?
There is a demanding scheduling waiting on Wednesday for the Hertha BSC players. In the morning, the players will be doing some circuit training before playing against DSC Arminia Bielefeld in a friendly (14:00 CET). “The regulars will get around 70 minutes of action. The rest of the players will remain on the pitch after the game to complete some exercises,” said Dárdai. “This friendly is extremely important for us, in order to get some minutes under our belt and to find our rhythm again.”
The head coach is now able to call upon one of his injured centre-backs again. Although the game against the 2. Bundesliga side is too early for Karim Rekik, Niklas Stark is available and will be able to gain some valuable game time. “After my injury, every training session and every minute of game time helps me get back to my best. I already feel the strain of preparation, but it's good that I was able to do all the exercises right from the beginning, "said Hertha's number 5.
Telekom Cup on Sunday
At the end of the week Hertha BSC will travel to Düsseldorf where they will face Fortuna, Bayern München and Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Telekom Cup. Dárdai hopes that Rekik and Valentino Lazaro (ankle) will be available for the games.
