Berlin – This season’s Bundesliga’s winter break has been considerably shorter than usual. With the last game in Freiburg a little over a week ago, Bruno Labbadia’s side were back at Schenckendorffplatz on Monday afternoon (28/12/20) to begin preparations for the first game of the new year against FC Schalke 04 at the Olympiastadion (02/01/21, 18:30 CET).

Santiago Ascacíbar and Dedryck Boyata were both unavailable, with the latter out with a foot injury. The Belgian had problems after the Mainz game and the period after the Freiburg game wasn’t long enough for the injury to fully heal. As a result, it was decided that the captain would sit out of training for the time being. Jhon Córdoba, on the other hand, was back in team training for the first time. “Him being back is really positive,” said Labbadia. “Jhon completed parts of training before the Freiburg game. Overall, you can see that he’s really motivated and driven.” Matheus Cunha was also full of energy after getting engaged to his girlfriend Gabriela Nogueira last week.
Pressing, running, shooting
After the warm-up, fitness coach Günter Kern led some running exercises, before the players split off into groups. One group completed a passing drill, while the other worked on pressing. “It was a really good training session. We worked on a few things that we want to improve on. Today, we looked at our play without the ball, tomorrow we’ll train with it,” said Hertha’s coach. The main part of training was a full game, with the coaching staff regularly interrupting to give tactical instructions. The session was rounded off with another run – likely not the last during the preparation before Saturday’s home game. Attackers Córdoba, Piątek, Lukébakio and Cunha also practiced some shooting from crosses before going into the changing room.
